May 2005 Archives
It wasn't long ago that my brother over at the Gateway posted an article on him buying and building his new computer. That got me thinking that I haven't posted any real in-depth updates lately, or ever for that matter. So, I'm going to write the story of me upgrading my B&W G3 to run Mac OS X.3 and beyong. It won't be as long as my brother's article but it will do. Here goes...
Don't that background stuff look quite nice. The way it looks transparent and whatnot. Mmmmm.... nice.
I tested it on Safari, Camino, and iCab on the Mac OS. Safari and Camino showed everything just the way it is suppose to be. iCab on the other hand, ughhhh. Hopefully, the new rendering engine present in iCab 3.0 will solve some problems.
On the PC side, I tested both Firefox and IE 5.something on my emulator. While Firefox showed everything just perfectly, IE was just down-right ugly. Scary.
I can't really take credit for the way the background is handled. I got the idea from another side that specialized in CSS things, and they were nice ideas too.
Its been well over a week since the last 'Picture of the Week' update. Did you actually expect me to keep it absolutely current? Ha.
Anyhoo, the picture for this week is of a PowerPC 604 chip. I took this after I had removed the large heatsink from its daughtercard because I wanted to see it. I afterwards put its heatsink back on and plopped it back in the PowerMac 8500 it came from.
Until the G3, or PowerPC 750, was released, this was the most powerful chip used in Macs. Well, somewhat speaking. There were several variants of the 604 chip actually. But I'm talking about the 604-line and not just the original '604'. For instance, the last 604 chip to be released was the 604ev, otherwise known as the Mach 5.
Hmm, that was nice. So if anyone sees and problems with this, do correct me on it...
Well, sorry about taking a little longer than a week to do this. I had to pick out a nice picture I've taken.
This week, we have a nice photograph of the sun setting on Panama City Beach. This was taken around 1 week ago or such on my family's recent trip there for the weekend. It was quite enjoyable. The water was cold but not too cold.
The 'Legacy', the hotel we stayed in, was quite enjoyable too. The room had an excellent view of the beach and the great expanse of the Gulf. Nice.
I wonder what picture I'll have for next week...
Ah. I've added a new section to my blog's side bar. I call it the picture of the week. Every week or so from now on, I'll will update it with a new picture from my own. Hell, I'll even plop in a description of what you are seeing.
In this 'Picture of the Week', this is my setup from around 2001 or 2002. I was using a G3 upgraded Powerbase at the time. Those were good days. Good days. Wow, you can even see the Zoom 56K modem that I used to get online. Dial-up, amazing.
Hmm, I wonder what I'll have up for next week.
