XLR8 vs CPU Director

| | Comments (3)

When Apple released the Mac OS 10.4.2 update, CPU Director was once again broken and my G3 was stuck at 800MHz till I could get something to clock it back up. Thinking about it now, I should have waited on installing the 10.4.2 update till Powerlogix updated CPU Director but I'm somewhat an impatient person. So, I went on the lookout for another alternative.

Thus, I found Daystar's XLR8 Mach Speed Tools. For one, they were compatible with my processor. The real goody about it, though, was that with it the OS actually knew what my processor speed was; with CPU Director, it is always 800MHz, no matter what.

Sadly, though, things weren't as fast as they could be. I realized this by comparing xBench scores from before and after installing XLR8's utility. While I believe most benchmarks aren't useful in comparing different machines, they can sometimes be quite useful when used on the same machine to test the affect of some action. For this, I needed to install the new version of CPU Director, which luckily was released not longer after the OS update.

By comparing scores, it seemed that XLR8 was actually slower in some regions. Of course, it also sped things up in some, although by an insignificant amount.

Despite the differences in speed being small and unnoticeable, I'm quite paranoid about such things. Thus, for now I'm still using CPU Director.

Such a boring entry...

actually, thomas, that was a very informative entry. now if someone has the same problem as you and goes looking for information in a search engine, this entry will come up, and they will be helped.

i always wondered about how you're doing your overclocking -- is it the same as on PC's? just upping the bus speed, multipliers, and voltage and crap?

The overclocking of my processor is done via a software interface. I'm still changing the processor multiplier and whatnot, I'm just doing it 'on-the-fly' without the need to restart or shutdown.

well, that's pretty damn neat, to say the least.
